Steve- I just wanted to let you know that no news is good news. We now have 40,000 miles on our Prius- 3000 in about a month. You and your team are to be commended for another job well done. We continue to enjoy all the features we had with our previous Prius plus we continue to learn about the additional features included in the more deluxe "package 5". Just for your information, the Touring wheels and tires that we took from the green car and put on the black car probably cost us about 3 to 4 miles per gallon. Our son bought the green car and with the regular 15" wheels and tires he's improved his mileage at least 3 miles per gallon. I suppose this is simple physics, being that the increased tread on the road not only improves traction it also creates friction that goes against miles per gallon. I'm on my fourth Prius (two, thx to Mony). I can't see how any intelligent being would ever go back after driving past so many gas stations. And avoiding tons of Noxious gases. Besides, I reserve the right to question the accuracy of this survey. Absolutely 100% of my random sampling of other Prius drivers over the past 10 years consistently replied that they absolutely loved their Prius. I respectively suggest that my survey is 10 times more accurate than this one. The caveat of this study is that many of these hybrid drivers just keep driving the same hybrid because they just keep going and going and going. The engine is only working half as hard as "normal"; the electric motor has zero maintenance; the brakes hardly get used. So why bother trading in a hybrid anyway? ( from CleanAirHybrid) April 2012

I am trying to research my issue. Have not been to the dealer yet. THE TRANSMISSION P LOCK MECHANISM IS ABNORMAL. PARK YOUR CAR ON A FLAT SURFACE AND FULLY APPLY THE HAND-BRAKE Vehicle has not been driven for about 3 months. It is my wife’s nice weather vehicle. Battery was week when I went to move it, Had to jump it. This was the message on the display after hooking up the jumper cables along with a huge red triangle on the dash that will not go out. From the articles I have read, it is the park motor on the transmission or possibly bad Auxiliary Battery. Pricing them to see the cheapest for first try. Thinking the auxiliary battery is a good replacement item anyway, being that it is now almost 8 years old. "

Dear Steve and Jenny. This is a photo of our day's operation. The 27 miles was 100% battery pack operation all at local in town speeds, mostly up to 45mph with one section that allowed me to keep up with traffic at 52mph. The air conditioner was going all the time. We normally do not go this far on a daily basis but we needed groceries, went to Toyota for a tube of "Pine Mica Green" touch up paint just in case. Went for lunch and met an old friend, went to the tax office and got up to date with Florida taxes and yes Steve, they did only charge on the difference after trade in. I also got our personalized Florida license plate PHEV-200 for Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle and the 200th autobeyours.com rebuild. You WILL get publicity from this transaction. Joyce and I are absolutely delighted with the way our new Prius performs. We are now going to plug it in for a recharge even though it is still showing that there is plenty of juice in the battery. Hi Steve, yes all best so far. Did do over 100 miles last week only in EV mode. Works just fine... hope we are not jinxing it?!? .... I have not even read the error buffer out, since I did not see the error light come on. So I just plug it in and drive... hope that will last a while! BTW we should think what to do with your second Prius. Guess we will need an other conversion. This Car is a 2006 with the basic package... Any Ideas? PICC Update On our drive up to Carlsbad, Kim Adelman was able to report some new developments at Plug-In Conversions Corporation. The Ewert brothers in Chicago, the guys who helped him develop the software that allows his system to seamlessly interact with the Gen II Prius code, are now working on two new vehicles for him: a Toyota Highlander Hybrid and the new Gen III Prius, another Steve Woodruff rebuild. There's no firm date on when either project will be completed, but Kim's hoping within the next six months. He also will be introducing lithium ion batteries, including a 12kWh pack that he believes will make Priuses competitive with the Volt in EV-mode. Finally, he will be coming back to Omaha, with a stop-over in Chicago to convert another Prius there, to install the new PHEV control panel on both LIVN GRN, our PICC-converted Prius, and Omaha Public Power District's Prius. The panel, which fits below the radio, will allow us to switch between Prius hybrid mode, all-electric mode, and three blended PHEV modes: short, medium and long range. Until now, we have had to connect my laptop and run a Java-based program to change the car's driving configuration. With this new control panel, Kim can fine-tune the car's performance on the fly. On our drive up to Carlsbad, the display showed an average of 79.1 mpg over 695 miles.

New boards working great, and makes a SUBSTANTIAL difference! When I first contemplated the pack I was hoping for a 50% increase in mpg. Now with the new boards I'm confident I'll be close to a 100% improvement. My mileages in mixed driving are now in the high 80's to low 90's. Just filled up today, I got 742 miles from the tank with the last 451 miles done with the upgraded system boards (I was on 4 pips when I first did the upgrade so I could be seeing 900 miles or more out of this new tank). My only issues have been the low coolant temperature error codes I've gotten twice for not being fast enough on the EV button. I must not be holding my tongue right because I have yet to get the push button display sequence to clear the codes. Also I think I've noticed some other things; one I can anticipate by feel the approaching transition from PHEV to hybrid mode (particularly at highway speeds) and make the switch manually prior to the software doing it for me. In the past when the switch occurred it appeared the ICE was running at much higher rpms that I experience in Lorie's '09 normally. Now it is less pronounced whether I do it manually or the system does it. That is an improvement. Finally, the car now does not want to go much over 60 in EV mode. It feels like it is really working spinning the ICE with not much additional power to the ground. Perhaps you could look at it when you come. I don't see it as much of an issue though because the 90 mpg in long PHEV mode is good enough and will last for much longer period. Suppose 70 mph EV is just grandstanding anyway. This weekend is the second oil change which also means I've put 10K miles on the car since leaving Steve's place. I'm happy!! Howard Merrill ( purchased a Prius and also a Plug-In Conversion Batt)

Hi Steve: Just wanted to let you know that the trip home was great. The car ran strong and smooth. It was a very comfortable ride at 72 mph and I got back to Nashville with 49mpg. Question: I’m not sure I understand the EV mode. When can that be initiated? I used it once when the interstate slowed to a crawl, and then I tried a few times around town yesterday and got a message that that mode could not be used at that time. Also, when the headlight flash lever is pulled back, the headlights still flash. Should that be disabled? You showed me yesterday how to adjust the headlights vertically. Hi Steve, I'm finally responding to the e-mails I recieved while away. The car is great and my wife absolutely loves it. We had to drive about 58 mph on the ride from Indiana to Missouri due to ice on the roads. That returned 53 mpg. On our long Christmas trip through NE, SD, MN, and IA we averaged about 75 mph and 38 mpg. Approximately 1,400 miles in the course of five days, and only $58 dollars spent for gas! And that's returning home with a 3/4 full tank. To recap, please send the white "plug" for the front bumper to: XXXXXX Also, we forgot to replace the oil dipstick and the fog lights. Hi Steve! We made it home around 7am pacific on Saturday! The Prius went for nearly 27 hours without a break other than fuel and bathroom stops. Not one hint of trouble! We were probably averaging 70-75 mph on the highway, with 42-44 mpg. When I get home from vacation, I will do some more driving and let you know what mpg i am getting. The few days I was home, I was getting 45-46. I will clean the air filter and check tire pressure as I am sure both have probably changed a bit after the drive. I must say, I love this car! I wish it could have come to Hawaii with me! The next question is whether I sell the Civic hybrid and buy another Prius? Hmm... The two cars drive very different from each other... each has its strong points! Civic - Starts out ICE, then increases electric. Has some instrumentation missing from Prius ie. Assist/Charge, ICE RPM. Terrible handling, very squishy and tippy suspension. Interior not as comfortable. Prius - Starts out electric, uses ICE at higher speeds?. Nice Averaging Graph of MPG over time. Handles great, nice tight suspension. Very comfortable interior. Fun to drive! Overall much better car! Still learning how to hypermile in the Prius, very different techniques than Civic. We sent your Scan Tool yesterday, thanks for that. We didn't need it although I did play with it a bit at home! Attached are some better/high res pics of the Prius in St. Louis. You may use them as you like! Let me know if you want bigger files! I am very curious as to the findings of all your various experiments. I hope you will keep me informed. I enjoyed hanging out at your shop. If I didn't have to, I wouldn't ever have left! Made it back to Iowa safe and sound, have been driving the prius some and absolutely love it. Drives straight and quiet and are averaging 48 mpg. The only problem we found is there is a clunk in the front end at parking lot speeds when you press the brake forward or then in reverse. Once in either direction. "Steve, It did great. I think that the new inverter fixed everything. I didn’t have to use the scan tool once! At about 29000 miles the maint reqd light came on but that may have just been due to the oil change requirement. When I got home I used the technique that you gave me in the glove box and it turned that light off. ....At any rate I love the car. It is much nicer than the earlier model and, even though it is bigger, it seems to be getting better mileage.........Paul in NM
